2011 Strong Kids Campaign at the Y

Editors Notes
I love opportunities like these, that build at the very core of our community by benefiting kids. What better way to get fit than to help deserving kids while doing so? Our own B-Fit's Crystal Champagne is an active member at the West Island's Y, and she will be taking part in the traditional ‘Cycle for kids’ fundraiser from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm this Sunday March 27th. So come on everyone to the Cycle studio at the West Island's Y, and show your support.

The event features a variety of popular indoor cycling instructors with music, refreshments and prizes. It is 30$ for one hour of cycling. The centre’s 2011 annual community support campaign was launched February 14th. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds throughout the year and this year, the centre’s goal is to raise $35 000 as part of the collective goal of the YMCAs of Québec to raise $372,000.

A donation that yields results: real stories, real people

This support has a real impact on the lives of youth as evidenced by the many stories shared at www.ymcastrongkids.ca particularly one shared by Kathy Dancsecs, Executive Director:

It is difficult to imagine a child being turned away from camp but sadly this is often the reality for a child with special needs. Every year we receive many requests from parents struggling to find day camps that offer an integration program for a child with special needs. One such request came from a mother. Her son had a tough year at school; he had experienced bullying and was finding it hard to ‘fit in’ and have positive interactions with his peers. She wanted her son to attend camp so he could have a carefree and fun summer, just like any other child.

Thanks to the charitable donations the YMCA West Island received, this child, along with 26 other participants, was able to attend day camp for 3 weeks with a companion paid for by the Y. This was a very positive experience for this child because of the enthusiasm, encouragement and support from his companion.  During those three weeks this child was able to feel good about himself, make friends, and feel like he belonged. And of course, have lots and lots of fun!’

Some examples of what a donation can do to help:

  • A gift of 25$ provides a youth who is at risk of developing a dependency, two hours of drug prevention counselling.
  • A gift of 65$ makes it possible for a child with special needs to live one day of unforgettable moments at day camp.
  • A gift of 170$ allows one child to participate in day camp for one week.

Our community has many children, teens, and families in need who wish to improve their health and well-being but do not have the means to do so.  They need your help.  Your donations can change lives. Help them live their childhood. Help us build them a brighter future. Donations can be made directly at the centre or online: www.ymcastrongkids.ca. You can also contact 514-630-9622.
