Sugar On My Tongue meets Nadine Jeffries

Up & Coming - Future Stars
Her designs are fresh, vibrant and a fantastic example of urban inspired fashion. Now Nadine Jeffries, the Montreal based fashion designer, talks to Sugar On My Tongue about her experiences, Dfly Design and her passion for the city and the world of fashion .

Your independent project, Dfly Design, seems to be well established with a great ethic and vision, but what has been the most difficult part of this process for you?

Financially it is very challenging as an independent designer, the expenses are high and constant. To produce and deliver a quality product is both time consuming and expensive. However, 'where there's a will there's a way!' if you have enough passion and drive you will make it happen.

What do you consider to be your main source of inspiration?

I run on instinct. My main source of inspiration comes from inside of me, my own Vision and desire to succeed and grow. It comes from a place I can't really describe. Other than my own instincts I'm inspired by City Life and an Urban setting of youth and youthful trends. Walking down the streets of Montreal inspire me, as well as gazing through small boutique windows. Fabric stores are also a great source of inspiration to me. When I feel my way through fabric stores, I am flooded with ideas. Fashion shows also get my adrenaline pumping!

On your website you quote figures like Shakespeare and Goethe, so has literature or poetry ever inspired your designs?

I have never really thought about poetry inspiring my designs, but since you asked me I have been forced to think about it. I have always been a romantic and idealist and visionary. I enjoy reading famous quotes about epic topics such as love, life, truth, success, etc. I enjoy things with symbolic meaning. I suppose reading certain poems and literature has inspired me, in that it propels me into a state of 'wanting to succeed'.

What do you consider to be the most exciting aspect of fashion? Has this idea changed over time?

The most exciting aspect of fashion for me is the Speed of Fashion and its ever-changing nature! I am a forward thinker, and fashion moves quickly and constantly through time. It works well with the way I function as an artist and a person. It stimulates me in a unique way different from anything else. Fashion has remained 'in motion' since the beginning, and I don't think this is going to change any time soon. This excites me even more. It's endless. I feel that it will engage me for a very long time.

DflyXXX focuses on raw female sensuality, so are there any women in particular that you consider to be iconic?

In a way, only symbolically. Symbolic icons like Venus (the Goddess of beauty, love and sensuality) and Nefertiti (a powerful Egyptian Queen of the past) are female figures that have stood out to me over time and naturally intrigued me. I could somehow relate to them, and believe in what they represented. I prefer to admire the 'meaning' of something, or what something 'represents' rather than an individual person. There are female icons today for sure, but no one who I personally connect with.

Are there any trends out there at the moment that you really can't stand?

As a designer, I support the idea of personal taste, and wearing what makes you feel most comfortable. Therefore, I try not to judge what others wear. Having said that, I really cannot see the beauty, style, or even practicality of the everlasting Ugg boot. An old style that is still in circulation. I just don't get it.

Christmas is fast approaching so what's on the top of your wish list?

On the top of my wish list would be new fabric (which is one of my favorite things to buy), but other than fabric, I would very much enjoy a Mac laptop, in which I would use as a second computer to conduct Dfly business only.

What is your favourite item of clothing?

I love jackets! There are so many variations/styles! They can be worn in so many different ways, with many different outfits, completely changing a look. Short, long, sporty, chic, classic, bomber, leather, trench... SO MANY!

Do you think Montreal is a city of fashion? Does it inspire you?

Absolutely! I consider Montreal to be the hottest fashion city in Canada for sure! Montreal inspires me incredibly, and that is why I am still living here. All I have to do is walk up the street, take the metro or go to the grocery store, and I will see something stylish on someone. I have no desire to leave here ....yet!

If you could get on a plane to go anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?

Italy.
