Montreal Fashion Week 24, Day 4 Highlights with Harricana and Télio competition

Silvia Di Iorio
It has been quite a whirlwind week of fabulous shows and collections. The final day of Montreal Fashion Week exposed us to up-and-coming as well as established designers, with a little bit of friendly competition and a whole lot of love for fashion. But first a few words from Shilpa about the Harricana experience.

Harricana

True to their track record the Harricana collection by Mariouche Gagne makes you yearn to hit ski slopes if only to be wearing some Harricana.

The capsule collection designed for Rossignol, with knee-high'er' fur boots to large ski googles and warm looking fuzzed up hats, set a great tempo for the show. Then there were metallic silver and black jackets, some amazing fur and leather backpacks, warm in-your-face fur vests and furred pompom topped beanies.

Fur shoulders on down jackets was particularly unique, the metallic jacket in the 4th picture below shows what I mean.

Metallic jackets, luxurious wool and the Inuit motifs attested to the inspiration behind the collection - Continental Ski Explorer meets Northern Plains Native. The Harricana 'Ecoluxe' brand also boasts recycled noble materials such as fur, cashmere, leather and silk. Urban chique for the great winter outdoors. Enjoy the pics before reading Silvia's wonderful round-up of the designer competitions that follow below.

TÉLIO PRESENTS: CANADA’S BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS 2013

Télio presented its 8th annual “Canada’s Breakthrough Designers” event, and what a diverse show it was! The collective fashion show had 25 talented Fashion Design students present their designs to a renowned panel of judges and a large audience. These 25 finalists were carefully selected from 23 participating fashion schools all across Canada.

The theme for 2013 is OVEREXPOSED, and each designer’s interpretation manifested into the creativity that we saw on stage that night. Inspired by minimalism, all the designs blended well together through the defined cuts and pastel colored fabrics.

Congratulations to all the finalists, and a job well done to the top 5 winners of the night, who received prestigious prizes:

TARGET EMERGING DESIGNER AWARD

The Target Emerging Designer Runway Presentation is “designed to support up-and-coming creative talents in Quebec”. Five designers unveiled three complete looks, one of which had to include an evening ensemble.

The panel of judges then selected a grand prize winner who received a $25000 grant, coverage in Elle Québec magazine, and a wearable collection that will be available in Target stores in 2014. Wow… how’s that for an honorable prize?

The 5 finalists are: Anastasia Lomonova, “By Thomas” by Natasha Thomas, Mélissa Nepton, “NISSE” by Nargisse Akyuz, “UNTTLD” by Simon Bélanger and José Manuel St-Jacques.

And the winner is… Mélissa Nepton! With a collection of stark contrast in black and white color blocking and stripes, the talented designer’s big win is well-deserved. Congrats to all the designers. Can’t wait to see Nepton’s collection in stores! See some of Mélissa Nepton's creations from Day 1.

And that wraps up Montreal Fashion Week… for now! Until next time, stay fashionable. XOXO
